The studio
The registered business name is Think Anchor Analytics. The work is municipal budget analytics: reading an ordinance and drawing it so a council can follow the baht.
Niran Chaiprasert kept the expenditure ledgers of a town municipality on Bangkok’s eastern side for twelve years. In 2014 he left that desk and began preparing chart sheets for neighbouring councils whose members received the ordinance as a thick photocopy in the week of the vote. The studio took its name the same year, from the habit of anchoring every chart to the ordinance’s own line rather than to a grouping invented for the picture. That is still the whole method.
Malee Srisuk joined in 2017. She had been draughting wall charts in a print shop in Min Buri, mostly for school fairs and temple fairs, and she brought a refusal to let a long project name be shortened for the sake of a margin. In 2019 the studio moved to its present rooms in Bang Chan, Khlong Sam Wa. The books are read there. Briefings still happen in the client’s chamber when the council wants the folio on its own table.
We take one full folio at a time in a given fortnight. The clerk’s week for corrections is part of the commission, and a second book opened in the same days gets a thinner reading. We decline that second book rather than pretend both were read properly.
Principal reader. He still reads every ordinance the studio accepts. His years as a budget clerk are the credential that matters here: he knows how a draft moves between the executive and the council, and he knows which page a member will ask for when a bar looks too calm.
She draughts the charts and watches the binding. She is particular about paper weight, about the size of type in a community hall, and about leaving the ordinance’s spelling of a project name untouched even when it runs to two lines.
The client is usually a budget office. It can also be a council chair, or a civic association that holds a draft it is allowed to discuss. An association cannot commission a folio that pretends to be the municipality’s official book. The sheet or folio is labeled with the document we were given and the date we read it.
We do not replace the municipality’s accountant, and we do not sign the ordinance. A misread that the clerk points out before the briefing is corrected in the folio. A disagreement about policy — whether a subsidy should exist at all — is the chamber’s, and it stays there.
